It's a Cat Thing
Of all the cats, the least likely to be a hunter would be our Finn. He is the "angel cat." Inside, Finn is the sweetest, most laid back cat in the house. He never starts a fight, lets the others eat his food, and follows all the rules. Outside, is another matter. There, he becomes - Finn the Fierce!
The three Rags and Dash were leaning over, staring into the water for what they hoped was a living thing to snare. Fearing someone would fall in, I scooped out the leaf and deposited it on the deck. Their looks went from high hopes to disappointment when they realized it was not alive. It was the same look I used to get from my kids when they heard the ice cream truck but I said no cause it was dinnertime.
Anyway, that temporary setback seemed to kick them into a different gear. Now, they were more determined than ever to find something. Of course, Finn did. I knew the minute he caught a lizard. How did I know? The rest of the guys gathered around him like he had just scored the winning touchdown. They were doing the cat equivalent of high fives and back slapping.
Then I came along and ruined their fun - again - by making him drop the lizard. Of course, while I was trying to scoop up the dazed and confused little guy, Dash and Finn were doing their best to "help" me. It got away before I could catch him but ran into the stones to safety.
When the lizard ran for cover, I took the opportunity to start catching cats to put inside. But it was like playing Whack-A-Mole! I was holding a cat with one arm, trying to stop another from getting the lizard, while attempting to catch him myself. I grabbed Finn first, since he is the most determined hunter. Dash was running back and forth, hoping to find the thing himself. Eli went in search of his own prey somewhere else and Chance - well Chance - wasn't really sure what was going on. I left him for last.
Throughout all of the chaos, Fancy was just chilling inside. He's been "out there" and caught "real stuff" like snakes and mice so a lizard is nothing to him. He just watches the other guys and shakes his head like they are clueless.
Once inside, they wanted to go right back out. Dash especially wanted that. He employed every Jedi Mind Trick he could muster to get me to open the cat door. I was working on the computer and he came over to me, put his little paw on my arm, looked me in the eyes and "mauhed" at me. I asked him what he wanted and he ran over to the window and did everything but point to it and say, "I want to go out! Open the door - please."
I alternate between being amazed at his cleverness and just taking it for granted. He really is something else.

Um, I hate to bother you but Dash took my treat. |
Could you maybe open this door, please? |
I love you, Mommy. |
I know there's a lizard here somewhere! |
I finally caved yesterday afternoon and let the boys go outside. I always search the screens for lizards before I let them out, so I felt pretty confident there would be no victims. Because it was slim pickings, they had to use their imaginations to get their dose of prey stalking. Eli convinced Finn and Dash the palm frond in the jacuzzi was alive. They believed him.

Where am I? Am I still outside? |

This is what I want! Open this please! |
