Yesterday I wrote about some of the differences between cats and dogs. Today, I've been thinking about how humans behave like cats or dogs.
I always thought of myself as a dog person. I could relate to dogs and I believed the BS cat haters throw out there to justify their hatred. I was told cats were sneaky and conniving.
No, they're quiet and thoughtful. In the wild, they have to be or they would starve to death. As a reformed cat hater, I can now say with all certainty, I am a cat person. I love cats. Surprise!
Being a cat or dog lover is different than having cat or dog personality traits.
People who have a dog personality are often loving, generous, forgiving and boisterous.
People who have a cat personality tend to be cautious, discerning, quiet and thoughtful.
Then, there's a creature like Boo! who breaks all the rules. She is both a dog and cat in personality; a lion in determination.
She reminds me of one of my cousins. When we were little, she was the one who brought the fun to the party. She was a trend setter and a tiny dynamo. She was also loving and forgiving - but did not put up with nonsense. She is still all of those things. I recently shared this insight with her and I think (hope) she took it as a compliment.
My husband is such a dog person - in preference as well as behavior. He is generous to a fault, loves unconditionally, and is almost too forgiving. He is not boisterous but rather quiet. He reminds me of Jack - or vice versa.
Both of our kids prefer dogs to cats but that's because they never lived with a cat.
It's funny how cat people are often attracted to dog people. My parents were a good example. My father was a dog person through and through. He did not have an unexpressed thought. My mother, on the other hand, would never acknowledge it but she was definitely a cat. She kept her secrets hidden and knew how to pounce when you least expected it.
If I had to describe myself, I lean more in the direction of cat-like these days. I am loving and generous, but cautious, discerning, and thoughtful. As for quiet or boisterous - well that depends on the day. (And, I am also a tad lizard-lazy.)
How about you? Are you a cat or a dog?
