Andy and I had a lot of errands yesterday. First of all, he had to take Rooney in for a checkup. As I feared, she is about twenty pounds over weight. She weighed in at 139 lbs. and should be about 120. However, her kidneys seem stable. Yay! Everybody loves Rooney so she got lots of hugs and kisses from the incredible staff at Hiawassee Animal Clinic. They're the best.

Jack: "Why can't I go, too? This is so wrong!"
Mom: "Jack, she's going to the vet. Do you want to go to the vet?"
Jack: "I like the vet! What's the vet again? I don't care - I want to go with them!!"
Mom: "Well, I'm sorry, but you're stuck here with me. They'll be back."
Jack: "Well, I'm gonna wait right here and Dad better take me somewhere, too."
When Dad and Rooney got back, Jack had to smell her from nose to tail. He was so busy checking her out, he forgot to bug Dad to take him for a walk. No sooner did they return, we decided to take off to finish the rest of our errands.
Now, when we leave the house, this is our routine:
Rooney goes into her kennel in the bedroom.
Dash goes into his "bedroom," mainly to keep him from wandering into Jack's space without us being there to supervise.
Jack has to go into an enclosed, gated area - for his own protection. We care more about Jack than whether or not we get burgled, and we don't want him crashing through the front door or a window in our absence.
Eli, Fancy, Finn and Chance have the run of the house.
As we were putting Jack in his space, he remembered the slight of the morning. He was crestfallen. He just stood there looking at us like we had just informed him he was going to get a bath. I mean, how could we do this to him after promising an outing?
Jack: "Wait a minute! You two realize this is unfair. You told me Dad would take me somewhere, too. This isn't 'somewhere' - this is prison!"
Dad: "Jack, you have to stay here. And don't go breaking that door down either, if it rains."
Jack: "It's going to rain? You know I can't handle rain. How can you do this to me?"
Mom: "Jack. We're going to the store. I'll bring you back a treat."
Jack: (Dramatically throwing himself down on his bed, like Camille in her death scene and letting out a deep sigh.) "Fine. But it better be good. And don't be gone too long. I could get out of here if I really wanted - and then you'll be sorry."
I'm fine right here. Go run your errands and I'll still be here when you get back. |
After going to Walmart - My list: cat food, a bin for kitty litter and a new fan for Roxy and, surprisingly, no kid toys; Andy's list: guy stuff - we went grocery shopping. Now, we don't generally buy dog treats in a grocery store. I opt for dog cookies made at Bark Avenue cause Jack and Rooney love them and I trust the ingredients. Instead, at the grocery store, I buy lots of deli turkey to share.

As soon as we walk through the door after grocery shopping, all of the cats come running to inspect the bags. Fancy knows there will be something good to eat. If we don't put certain things in the fridge or the microwave, the cats will get to it while we're unloading the rest of the groceries. I learned that the hard way with sushi. And, they all know the sound of deli turkey being opened.
Everybody gets some - even little Dash. While all the other cats are very picky, Dash will eat just about anything. He even tried to take the glue off a package but I got to him before he succeeded.
Dash: "What do you have? I want some!"
Mom: "Dash - it's Swiss cheese - you won't like that."
Dash: "I love Swiss cheese! What is that? Just let me have some."
Mom: "Fine - here."
Dash: "Oh, I love this. Wait - yuck - that's gross! What else do you have?"
Mom: "Olives. I'm gonna say no to that."
And on it goes. The daily drama of life with animals. I wouldn't trade this life for anything in the world.
