Day Eighty

Wonderful Chaos

Oh, I so want to write a political piece today, but I will behave myself and stay the course. Animals. It's all about the animals. Besides, animals are pure and a lot more deserving of my attention than just about any politician.

Yesterday. Oh, yesterday. The Watchetts (Matchetts and Warrens) had another pool bash. Three little boys; ages three, five and six and a half ("and a half" must be added you know); one little girl, age nine; three young adults and two old codgers. Then there are the fur family members: two Bullmastiffs, five cats, one hamster and a bunny. Oh, can't forget to mention four Super Soakers, four regular squirt guns and four pool noodles. Put that all together and you have CHAOS! Wonderful, wonderful chaos.

The morning started with our grandson requesting a Legos Ninjago Airjitzu. Innocent enough request. I'll be coming back to that. Something like $300 later, we emerged with the $10 Airjitzu, a Minion toy, a doll, a "man toy" - which is what my grandson calls action figures, four squirt guns, and a bicycle. There would have been two bikes had I been able to convince my grandson to pick one. He did not want one, and I really, really tried.

It turns out the Airjitzu is a Legos thing that has to be assembled. It has a strip that looks like a zip tie that is inserted into the base. When it's pulled, the top of the thing goes flying off into the air. Well, his flew into the ceiling fan, hit windows and crashed to the floor. (It also ended up in the pool eventually.) It drove the dogs crazy. Jack especially. He doesn't like confusion and activity in his domain. The cats, especially Dash, loved it.

Jack: Humph - why do these kids have to be so noisy? Why can't they sit still? What are you doing? I can't keep track of all this!!

Rooney: It's okay, Jack. They smell good! If you wait long enough, one of them always drops food.

Dash: I love this! I never saw a little person and they're fun! I like the noisy thing that shoots stuff around (car track) and the girl holds me and gives me lots of kisses. And the boys leave that flap thing (toilet lid) up so I can play in the water.

Eli, Finn and Chance lounged on the bed all day. Fancy slept on the dining room table. Petey loves the attention he gets, especially when he also gets treats like blueberries. Roxy hides. Something about noise and squirting water gives her the yips.

While I wouldn't trade my Ragdolls or my soul mate, Tuxedo cat, for anything, if I had known what kid-friendly cats Abyssinians are, I would have had them the entire time my kids were growing up. They are about as close to perfect as any cat can get. First of all, they're smart and ready for any play action a little boy can dream up. It was the three boys and Dash huddled around the race track, watching the cars fly by. At one point, a little guy came out to complain, "We're trying to race but Dash keeps stopping the cars!" As active as Abys are, when it's time for cuddles, they're all about it. Little Dash will snuggle with our granddaughter as long as she wants. He purrs away and closes his little eyes in pure bliss. They don't shed, which is one of the things my son likes. I actually caught my not-so-crazy-about-cats son holding Dash while everyone else was outside. Never dreamed I'd see that!

Kids and animals are such a great combo.
