Last night was memorable, and not in a good way. If I was twelve, it would have been a blast. However, I am fifty years away from that. I stayed up to finish watching a show and just went to bed in a spare bedroom. Sometimes I feel like I am twelve again when I sleep in there because it's the canopy bed I had when I was a little girl. Anyway, I actually wouldn't call what I did, "sleeping." I became, simultaneously, the trampoline, base and prey for four out of the five cats. Fancy wisely stayed away. Dash was front and center.
Do you mind? We're trying to sleep here. |
Chance spent most of the night draped across my feet, preventing me from moving, which is essential to preventing leg cramps when one has fibromyalgia. But that was remedied by Dash, who attacked my legs under the covers, causing involuntary movement. They all took turns chasing each other and using my body as a launching pad and "base" after each game of Tag. Eventually, Dash got tired and decided to cuddle next to me. Now, I was ecstatic about that - except for the fact he has the loudest purr I've ever heard. It was like trying to sleep next to an idling weed whacker.
I guess I got used to it, because I eventually fell asleep at about 4 a.m.Three hours later, when I was jolted awake by a door slamming - the only way to close wooden ones swollen by Florida humidity - Dash was still there next to me. I have to say, I love all of my cats. Each one is unique. Fancy is - well - a human trapped in a cat suit. But there is something so compelling about Dash. I can't explain it. He doesn't seem like he would be very affectionate - evoking images of a tiny mountain lion and all - but he truly is a little love. If you happen to catch him in midair and hold him like a baby, he will stay and purr forever.

I think there is a nap in my future. I will, however, go into the No Cat Zone to sleep. And I will shut the door and use ear plugs. Because, as soon as I disappear from sight, Eli will start with his plaintive crying, "Hull - ohh? oooo - hulloooo-Oh? HULLLOOOOOOOO?????"
