Day Three Hundred Three

Boo!by Traps

Life with Boo! is challenging under the best of circumstances. The grands spent the night, which throws off the routine here. All of the other cats cope. Boo! sees it has her opportunity to do stuff she hasn't tried before - unnoticed. Or so she thinks.....

I am still paying close attention to her, but I think she thinks I'm too stupid or feeble to see. When I am distracted by - oh let's see - cooking, doing laundry, cleaning up, unpacking groceries, watching a movie with the kids (all of which did occur yesterday) - Boo! seizes the moment and gets into just about everything.

Last night, she licked the frosting off a cupcake, which I left momentarily unattended because my grandson wanted different frosting on his cupcake (don't ask.) I smelled her breath to make sure and, yes, she had frosting breath. She also got into the empty Legos box and fell off the table while inside of it. Oh, and then there was the episode with the teeny, tiny Legos spear.

Boo! found the thing somehow and ran under the bed, to the very center, where she couldn't be reached. Of course this deeply concerned my grandson who was afraid she would eat it. I wasn't 100% certain, but I doubted she would want to eat a three inch piece of plastic. Nonetheless, I grabbed the broom and got down on my knees to slide the "spear" closer to the kids so they could retrieve it.

This morning, she absconded with the lid to the maple syrup, licked the pancake batter when my back was turned and got into the butter and a box of blackberries. She also lobbed kale and a pinecone under the bedroom door and sat waiting for it to "return." She got into the dirty dishes in the sink, harassed Copper and nearly stepped on the hot griddle. This I saw and saved her from burned paws.

Most people would find these things annoying or problematic. I love her because of the things she does. She is a totally free spirit with imagination and moxie. She can't weigh five pounds, but thinks she's a giant and stands up to even the likes of Jack. How something so small can be so fearless is a mystery. But there is a lesson to be learned.

I wish I had been like Boo! when I was younger. As an older woman, I've been called formidable. But I wasn't always. There were so many times in my life when I wish I had been able to approach certain people or situations with courage and determination. It's never too late to learn - or to teach my grandchildren - Go through life like Boo!

This was playing out while I was trying to type. Eli was on my desk first, then Finn decided to join us. Eli was clearly not happy...

Gee, I just wanted to sit with Mom, too.
Why do you have to be so mean?
